Winter Tips For Your Home

When winter approaches there are certain things we all need to do to prepare our homes. Spending money to
prepare your home seems frustrating at first, but I assure you, you will save money by the time winter has
finished. So let’s look at some tips to prepare your home for winter.
1. If you have any pipes inside or outside your home that usually freeze in the winter, then
you need to buy some heat wrap. You can find it at the hardware store and it will help insulate your pipes. If a
frozen pipe were to bust, it’s going to cost a lot of money and time to get fixed. Not to mention the time you’ll
spend without water.
2. Insulating your water heater is another way to save hundreds of dollars. You water heater
will have to work less if it is insulated. You will still see the benefits in the summer time as well.
3. Most of our homes have small air leaks. They can be found around doors, windows, and even
some walls. You may need to purchase insulating foam or door skirts to help keep the cold air out. Another popular
method is to cover your windows with plastic.
4. Generally adding insulation in your attic or in the basement will help keep the heat
inside. Just make sure that you purchase fireproof certified insulation. I’d rather spend an extra $200 than for my
house to burn down.
5. As I mentioned before about covering your windows with plastic, buying a set of thermal
curtains will also help keep your house insulated. Most windows do a very poor job at insulating in the winter, so
you should do yourself a favor and buy some thermal curtains.
6. Always check your fire alarms and fire extinguishers. If you don’t have an extinguisher you
should purchase one for each floor of the house. This can be an absolute life saver should you have a small fire.
You can usually pick up a small one for under $40 at a hardware store. $80 could be the difference between $500
damage and $200000.
7. Always have a stock pile of emergency foods, flashlights, candles, portable heaters, and
water. The winter time is even more deadly when we are unable to get basic necessities such as food and heat during
the cold months.
8. Keep some heating pads, heating blankets, and a good winterized sleeping bag on hand. You
can’t go wrong with a pair of battery heated gloves and battery heated socks either. You never know!
Preparing for winter doesn’t have to cost you a fortune, but it will require some basics. Some of your purchases
will last for years so the following years won’t take as much change from your pocket.
